I hated this book. And I mean I fucking hated this book. I finished it because I thought there is no fuckin way it can be this terrible. Alex has to redeem himself somehow but no. Alex is literally the worst male lead I have ever read. If he were real I would plot his murder. Hell he isn't real and I am plotting his murder. And Nicki is worse. If a man forces himself on you, you do NOT give in and fall in love with him. You slit his throat when he sleeps.. yeah wow I should have waited to writ..more

I love the theme of the h being an indentured servent and going from riches to rags and I think that Kat Martin did a good job with it. I also loved that it was set in Louisianna and on a plantation.

Lame. That would be this book in a nutshell. What a tease. It was so great at the beginning and i was really excited to think what might happen in the middle and end. If this book were being read aloud i probably would have starting boooooing. The main characters had as much depth as my daughters kiddy pool. The hero or rather supposed to be, was more like a pedophile. If you want a good read, go to about page 30 then create your own ending.

Not bad
This was an interesting plot set in 19th Century Louisiana when people sold themselves into indentured servitude. Women were targets for sexual abuse under this system as this story follows the life of a young girl.
The unfortunate thing about reading this book was the need for editing. That alone dampened my reading experience. Again, the plot is good as are the characters and there's plenty of action and romance.

Got this on a whim from the library and didn't really like it. It started out promising and I thought it would be something that I enjoyed but the whole dynamic of the main characters got tiring and repetive before even getting to the halfway mark. Nothing much was happening for a while that I got bored and skimmed some pages. Also, didn't like the heroine much, she came off as a bit too manipulative and always running away.
On a positive, loved that the setting was in the south US and it was ni..more

I loved it. Then hated it. Then loved it again.
There’s so much to love about this book. It had passion and that sort of love be hate relationship that makes it perfect. I like that Nicole stuck to her guns and didn’t let down from not wanting to become a mistress. But then I really started to hate Alex. Couldn’t he just accept that she didn’t want to be a mistress? He seemed selfish in that he only did what he thought was good for him. Maybe he thought she needed protection. But i would think a..more

A very good story with the usual something standing in the way of the couple getting married. In this one Nicki was a very modern day woman including knowing how to balance financial records. Luckily she did or they never would have married. Though I was a little upset with the fact that when she said no to sex he did not really listen.

Creole Fires
It was a very exceptional novel. It was very hard to put down when I finished it. The primary characters Nick and Alex were well defined and actually liked them. Would
recommend this book to anyone who loves romance. Liked the location where it took place.

Okay--I really did not like Kat Martin's contemporary romances, so what do I do? Immediately launched into some, well, historical romance?
Shall I say, this is more like it? So often you are forced to deal with English Regency society, or some variance of Scottish highlanders. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy those as much as anyone else, but having a novel set with the same concept (Plantation owner = society nobleman / fallen from grace former upper class woman = perhaps a poor noblewoman or whatev..more

Not my genre, but I like this author. It's a fun read, and it's sexy!

This was a great read from start to finish. I adored the hero and the heroine wasn't your typical twit bodice ripper heroine that I've come to expect. The most annoying alpha hero's to me are the ones that put their foot down and then give in when the heroine stomps on that foot - Alex says what he means and means what he says with no questions asked.

I enjoyed this one, mostly because of the theme, of men thinking they'd be satisfied with making the woman their mistress and realizing just how wrong they are. And Kat Martin's writing never fails. It's always passionate, engaging and completely absorbing. The only thing I didn't quite buy in the story is how Nicole tried to pass herself off as 12 or 13 when she's 18. I get that it might work when she's only 15 getting mistaken to be 18 but there's a huge gap between 12 and 18 and she's not scr..more

This book was surprisingly good. I got it because Amazon had it listed as the third book in another series (unrelated characters), but that doesn't appear to be the case. It has been a while since I've read an antebellum Southern Romance, but I did enjoy it. Some parts go on and on and others aren't detailed enough, but it was worth my time. Good steamy (sometimes hot) romance, but those parts are few and far between.
My biggest disappointment was I paid $7 to download on my kindle for a book from the 90's and realized half way through that I had already read it about 5 or 7 years ago. Good news was that I didnt have to put it down because it was bad. It was nice reading it again and not a let down in that respect. Just not happy spending that much money on it. On to another book......

Not quite what I expected but it was well written so I finished it. The end was a bit too dramatic for my taste.
Throughout this book, I have been desperatly wanting to be hit Alex on the head.. Then i fall in love. Then i want to smack him. Amazing
I skipped through parts of this when I read it awhile back. The hero's conduct just did not sit well with me.

the book ended in the middle for me
I actively disliked the heroine, who struck me as stubborn to her own detriment, unrealistic and manipulative. Otherwise, its a good enough story

Cain is magnetic, powerful, controlling—and hiding more than one secret. He promised Carly’s granddad he’d protect her. The old man took a chance on him when he was nothing but a kid with a record, and now he’s the multi-millionaire owner of a rival firm.
